Level II Horton-based Modern Dance - 6:30pm-8:00pm w/ Jenny Oliver

Class is a Horton based modern taught at a pace designed for the students in the room. Class begins with sequential and consistent warm-up, continues with center phrases that are designed to promote competence and growth of proper technique. Students are encouraged through proper corrections focused on alignment and detailed explanations of the initiation of movements. This is important in reducing injury to both new and seasoned dancers. Across the floor phrases are poly-rhythmic in progression, promoting a sharp mind and allowing the skill of acquiring information quickly and accurately to develop. A person does not need to have the goal of becoming a professional modern dancer.

Intermediate Contemporary - 6:30pm-8:00pm w/Jeryl

Modern principles include: centering, alignment, gravity, breath, contraction, release, fall and recovery, suspension, balance and off-balance, tension and relaxation, opposition and emotion. Contemporary dance is very interpretive in its choreography and often focuses on emotions and storytelling with or without music. Contemporary dance can be balletic or abstract, jazz-influenced or lyrical, structured or unconventional. Modern dance pioneers such as Martha Graham and Merce Cunningham paved the way for a new contemporary technique and vocabulary to flourish and influence how we dance, and it continues to grow in popularity. Dancers are challenged both physically and emotionally and encouraged to push the boundaries of their dance experience.
